Transrectal Ultrasound-Guided Prostate Biopsy (TRUS-Bx)
A TRUS-Bx (Transrectal Ultrasound-Guided Prostate Biopsy) is a minimally invasive procedure used to diagnose prostate cancer or other prostate conditions. It involves using ultrasound guidance through the rectum to take small tissue samples (biopsies) from the prostate.
How the Procedure Works
While lying on his side, a lubricated ultrasound probe is inserted into the rectum to visualize the prostate gland. Using real-time imagery, a spring-loaded needle is guided through the rectal wall into the prostate to take 10-12 tissue cores. The procedure takes about 15-30 minutes and is often done with local anesthesia.
Recovery
Most patients can go home the same day.
Some mild rectal bleeding, blood in urine or semen, and some discomfort are common for a few days.
Drink fluids and avoid strenuous activity for 24-48 hours.
