InterStim Device
An InterStim device is a type of sacral neuromodulation (SNM) therapy used to treat bladder and bowel control problems, such as: overactive bladder (OAB), urinary retention, urgency urinary incontinence, and fecal (bowel) incontinence.
How the Procedure Works
The InterStim system is an implanted neurostimulator that sends mild electrical impulses to the sacral nerves (typically around the S3 nerve root in the lower back). These nerves control the muscles involved in bladder, bowel, and pelvic floor function.
By modulating the nerve signals, InterStim helps normalize communication between the brain and these organs, improving control.
Recovery
Minimal downtime: light activity for a few days
Discomfort or bruising at the implant site
Full return to activities within 1–2 weeks
