Rezūm Water Vapor Therapy

Rezūm (pronounced “ruh-ZOOM”) is a minimally invasive, non-surgical treatment for benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) - a common condition in aging men where the prostate gland enlarges and obstructs urine flow.

Approved by the FDA in 2015, Rezūm utilizes water vapor (steam) therapy to reduce excess prostate tissue and alleviate urinary symptoms.

What happens during Rezūm Water Vapor Therapy?

The procedure involves inserting a small device through the urethra to deliver controlled bursts of sterile steam directly into the enlarged areas of the prostate. Each treatment lasts about 9 seconds. The thermal energy from the steam causes the targeted prostate cells to die. Over time, the body absorbs the treated tissue, resulting in a reduction of prostate size and relief from symptoms such as frequent urination, weak stream, and urgency.

Why is Rezūm performed?

Recovery

Rezūm is performed when BPH causes significant symptoms such as:

  • Difficulty starting or stopping urination

  • Weak urine stream

  • Frequent or urgent need to urinate, especially at night

  • Straining to urinate

  • Incomplete emptying of the bladder

Rezūm is also an option for men wishing to avoid a more invasive surgical procedure and to use a non-drug alternative to manage BPH.

  • In-office procedure - home the same day

  • A urinary catheter may be placed for 1-3 weeks to help with urination while swelling subsides

  • Most men can return to normal activities within a few days, though full recovery may take a few weeks or more
