Inflatable Penile Prosthesis (IPP)
An IPP is a surgically implanted device used to treat erectile dysfunction (ED) when other treatments (like medications or injections) have failed or are not appropriate. It allows a man to achieve and control an erection manually.
How the Procedure Works
A standard IPP consists of three parts: Cylinders implanted into the penis, a pump placed into the scrotum, and a fluid reservoir placed into the lower abdomen. When the pump is squeezed, fluid moves from the reservoir into the cylinders, creating an erection. Pressing a release valve returns the fluid to the reservoir, deflating the penis.
Advantages of an IPP
Reliable and discreet
Natural-looking erections and flaccidity
High patient and partner satisfaction
No need for ongoing medication
Recovery
Most patients go home the same day or after an overnight stay.
Moderate discomfort, swelling, and bruising in the scrotum and groin area are common.
Avoid heavy lifting, bending, or strenuous activity.
