Bladder Sling with Rectus Fascia

A bladder sling with rectus fascia is a surgical procedure used to treat stress urinary incontinence (SUI) in women using the patient’s own tissue - specifically, the rectus fascia, which is the connective tissue from the abdominal wall. This type of sling is also referred to as an autologous fascial sling. SUI is the involuntary leakage of urine during activities that increase abdominal pressure, such as coughing, sneezing, or exercising.

How the Procedure Works

A strip of rectus fascia is taken from the lower abdomen. The fascia is tunneled beneath the urethra and anchored to strong pelvic structures, creating a hammock-like support. This sling supports the urethra and helps it stay closed during activities like coughing or sneezing, preventing leakage.

Benefits of the Rectus Fascia Sling

  • Using your own tissue eliminates the risk of mesh-related complications like erosion or rejection

  • Long-term success rates are high, especially in complex or recurrent incontinence cases.

Recovery

  • Most women can return to light activities within a few days, avoiding heavy lifting and strenuous activity for 4-6 weeks

  • Some may experience abdominal pain or discomfort temporarily
