MRI Fusion Transperineal Prostate Biopsy

An MRI fusion transperineal prostate biopsy is an advanced, targeted method to diagnose prostate cancer by combining MRI imaging with real-time ultrasound guidance, and accessing the prostate through the perineum (the area between the scrotum and anus), rather than through the rectum.

How the Procedure Works

  • MRI Fusion Technology

  • A pre-biopsy MRI scan detects suspicious areas in the prostate.

  • This scan is "fused" with live ultrasound images during the biopsy, allowing the urologist to precisely target areas more likely to harbor cancer.

  • Transperineal Approach

  • The needle is inserted through the skin of the perineum, rather than the rectum.

  • This approach lowers the risk of infection significantly compared to transrectal biopsies.

Advantages of MRI Fusion Transperineal Biopsy

  • Higher cancer detection rate, especially for clinically significant tumors

  • Lower infection risk (avoids rectal bacteria)

  • More accurate targeting of suspicious lesions

  • Better sampling of difficult-to-reach areas

Recovery

  • Most patients go home the same day

  • Resume light activities within 24–48 hours

  • Full recovery within a few days
